Why are wood fuels carbon neutral?
Wood growth absorbs nutrient and CO2 from air and soil and gives out oxygen during the day
When a tree dies or is cut down, it decomposes and gives off energy and all the CO2 it absorbed
Burning wood short circuits this producing useful heat, nutrient rich ash, and emitting the same amount of CO2
The nett effect is neutral on total CO2 in the atmosphere throughout the relatively short cycle.
Sustainable management of new woodlands and forests helps maintain or even improve that balance
With pellet, made from sawdust, the wood isn’t even specially cut down saving even more energy.
Modern wood burning boilers are at least 90% efficient and, when coupled with modern controls can save even more energy
.
For comparison:
Coal, oil and gas emit CO2 when burned. The CO2 was absorbed millenia ago by ancient forests, so this burning contributes to global warming ,old oil and gas boiler are typically no more than 80% efficient resulting in even higher levels of fuel consumption and CO2 production
Fossil fuel fired power stations use upwards of 6-8units of energy to deliver 1unit of usable electricity to your home. So, even if a new electric heating device is highly efficient it is still creating similarly large amounts of warming CO2 as other non-sustainable methods.
